After 25 years as a prosecutor in Southampton and Isle of Wight Counties, Steve Edwards is retiring as Isle of Wight’s Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney at the end of the year. During that time, Steve focused on prosecuting domestic and sexual assault crimes in juvenile court—even as he took on jury trials in murder and other major felony cases in circuit court. For most of his years as a prosecutor, Steve also volunteered his time to build diverse programs at Mill Swamp Indian Horses. This nonprofit has served the community with a wide range of educational services, programs for children, and weekly sessions for in-patient PTSD veterans at the Hampton VA Medical Center. Recognizing that horses and traumatized humans share the same body language, Steve developed and implemented programs for abuse victims and the professionals who work with them. For this work, Steve was named Smithfield’s 2022 Citizen of the Year by Ruritan and Rotary Clubs and was recognized by the Virginia Association of Commonwealth’s Attorneys, the Virginia Attorney General’s Office, and the Virginia General Assembly.

We will be celebrating Steve’s retirement from practicing law, which will free him up to expand services and programs at Mill Swamp Indian Horses.
