About The Gwaltney Frontier Farm Educational Foundation, Inc.

Why This Foundation Matters

Some see the beauty of the surrounding woods, others who approach Mill Swamp Indian Horses focus on the nearly extinct Colonial Spanish Horses, including the Corollas, Choctaws, Marsh Tackys and other strains of historic American horses. Others are drawn to the foals that are raised and trained here. Eyes quickly move over to the program participants who train horses in the Round Pen using gentle, humane techniques of Natural Horsemanship. Getting out of the car one often hears the sound of folk, roots and Americana music coming from the porch at the tack shed as young people learn to play traditional instruments and sing old songs. Many people show up for specific programs including weekly sessions with veterans with PTSD from the local Veterans Hospital, or training for first responders, both in learning to handle their own job related trauma and learning how to better communicate with traumatized victims that they encounter at every scene of a crisis. Some come to learn more about vermicomposting, microbial farming, and pasturage. Some are interns who came to learn how to build an equestrian program that saves horses..and people. But in one way or another all come to learn and though Mill Swamp Indian Horses lacks bricks and mortar, the reality is that it is first and foremost an educational institution. It is an educational institution with no paid staff and it has never turned away anyone for inability to pay program fees. And that is where the Gwaltney Frontier Farm Educational Foundation comes into play. We are a 501 (c) 3 non-profit that raises funds to help offset the cost of the educational programs at Mill Swamp Indian Horses.
